MISSION & OUTREACH

General Missionary Society

 The General Missionary Society was organized in 1921 and continues to offer loving mission works with other women of the church through its Circles, Northside, and Southside Matrons. The General Missionary Society meets in the Board Room the 1st Monday of each month @ 11:00 a.m. for Bible study and to plan and carry out mission programs designed to reach the disadvantaged among us. Our community outreach touches the lives of those residing in Children’s Homes, Women and Children Shelters, Nursing Homes and in a hospital where families in all Critical Care Waiting Rooms are provided “comfort treats”. The 3rd Sunday in November is recognized in our church as Mission Emphasis Sunday and includes through worship the participation of other mission groups in our church. Northside Matrons

Meets the 2nd Tuesday each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Boardroom, contact person, Mrs. Carolyn Johnson 252-4007

Southside Matrons

Meets the 1st Tuesday each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Boardroom, contact person Mrs. Roberta Hampton, 326-0038  

Sunshine Circle

Meets the 2nd Sunday each month after the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service in the Fellowship Hall, contact person, Mrs. Alma Dennis, 780-6109.[/learn_more]

Women on Mission

Women on Mission is an organization of Christian women called to serve God by showing his love to others through mission work. The group works with several initiatives throughout the Birmingham area incluiding Grace House, Alethia House, Children’s Village and Loveman Village. The group also has worked through a sewing circle to provide dresses for children in Africa. Women on Mission meets at 11 a.m. the second Saturday each month at 11:00 a.m. in the Boardroom.

Meets at 11:00 a.m. every 3rd Wednesday in the Boardroom.

Prison Ministry

The mission of this ministry is to assist the church in its outreach: to offenders, ex-offenders, victims, and their respective families through contact, visitations, guidance, and training. The goal of this ministry is to faithfully lead the families God and invite them into the fold of Christianity with a church family.

The Prison Ministry meets every every 2nd Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102. Mr. Henry Jones contact person, you may reach him at 849-9349 or leonhj@bellsouth.net 

His Hands Ministry

The mission of this ministry is to alleviate disparities in health care and health care resources among the underserved populations in the 12 Alabama Black Belt counties by providing medical and Christian ministry. Volunteers from Sixth Avenue partner with other community organizations and churches to provide culturally sensitive, sustainable medical services, evangelism, discipleship, and ongoing support to Black Belt counties. Angel Tree Ministry

Through the Angel Tree ministry, Sixth Avenue brings the love of Christ year-round to prisoners’ kids in the greater Birmingham area. Each year as the names of children are received, members make personal contact with the parent or guardian and provide Christmas gifts. They also invite the children to participate in the church’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, Vacation Bible School and the Back-to-School Rally. Members provide school supplies and extend camping opportunities to the children as well.
